As temperatures drop across Central Virginia, we’re not the only ones looking for a warm, cozy place to spend the winter. Mice and rats and other furry opportunists may be eyeing YOUR home!
While rodents are perfectly capable of surviving outdoors in burrows, trees, and protected nesting areas, our homes offer some irresistible advantages: warmth, food, water, and shelter. And who can blame them? Unfortunately, you probably don’t want your home to be their winter vacation destination!
Why Do Rodents Move Indoors in Winter?
As the weather gets colder in Charlottesville, Waynesboro, and surrounding Central Virginia communities, rodents may take advantage of small openings around foundations, doors, pipes, and attic vents.
Here’s a surprising fact: A mouse can squeeze through a hole just 1/4 inch wide!
Once inside, rodents can damage insulation, chew electrical wiring, contaminate food, and establish nests in hidden areas. And because mice and rats reproduce quickly, a small problem can become a much bigger one.
Signs You May Have Unwanted Winter Guests
Rodents are excellent at hiding, but they often leave clues:
-
Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls and ceilings
-
Small droppings in cabinets, pantries, or storage areas
-
Chewed food packaging, wiring, or insulation
-
Shredded paper or fabric used for nesting
-
Unusual odors in enclosed spaces
Spotting one mouse doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an infestation, but it’s a good reason to investigate!
Five Ways to Keep WILD Outside!
1. Seal the gaps. Inspect your foundation, doors, vents, and utility openings. Use rodent-resistant materials to close potential entry points.
2. Store food securely. Keep pantry staples, birdseed, and pet food in tightly sealed containers.
3. Clean up the yard. Move firewood away from the house, trim overgrown vegetation, and eliminate clutter that provides hiding places.
4. Check hidden spaces. Inspect attics, basements, and crawl spaces for signs of rodent activity.
5. Eliminate water sources. Repair leaking pipes and address moisture problems around your home.
