Spring brings a lot of wonderful things: flowers, new leaves, greener grass, warmer weather… But it also brings some not-so-great things, like unwanted bugs and pests. One of the least popular things that spring brings is YELLOW JACKETS.
In the spring, yellowjacket queens emerge from hibernation to establish new colonies. This is the time when they begin searching for nesting sites and food sources. Spring Emergence: Yellowjacket queens spend the winter in protected areas like hollow logs or cracks in buildings. As spring temperatures rise, they emerge to find suitable locations for their new nests. Nest Establishment: The queen will then begin building a paper nest, often in underground locations like abandoned burrows or in tree cavities. Colony Growth: Once the nest is established, the queen lays eggs, which hatch into larvae that are then fed by the queen. These larvae eventually develop into worker yellowjackets, which help to expand and maintain the nest. Yellowjacket colonies started by just one queen can grow to include anywhere from 400 to 5,000 workers later in the season, depending upon the species.
This outline of Yellow Jackets’ typical springtime activity helps pest control companies understand how to interrupt, reduce, eliminate or keep families safe from an aggressive yellow jacket invasion near their homes that might cause them annoyance and/or pain. If the above-mentioned things occur near your home this Spring and are left untreated, the yellow jacket colony will grow throughout the summer, worker yellow jackets will become more active and aggressive. They forage for food and sweets, easily becoming a big nuisance at family gatherings, picnics and cookouts.
Yellowjackets are not just annoying; they’re also dangerous. They will bite and sting unprovoked. Since they don’t lose their stinger, they can sting numerous times. To someone who is allergic, a single yellowjacket sting can be deadly.
