Let’s face it. Winter is definitely not the most convenient of seasons to live through and it is just around the corner. Winter in Virginia is pretty cold most of the time, ice and/or snow may keep you stuck inside, and the cold can even cause major damage to your home/personal belongings if you’re not careful. That’s why Holistic Pest Solutions decided to make this list of easy, effective and eco-friendly cold weather hacks that will hopefully make surviving this year’s Virginia winter a little easier.
Where Is Cold Air Leaking In?
You don’t need any sort of fancy gadget to figure out where cold air is leaking in your home. All you need is some incense and caulk. Simply light an incense stick and hold it near your doors and windows (not close enough to cause a fire, of course!) Once you find those pesky leaks, seal them with caulk. This hack can save you some serious money in the winter two different ways. It’ll save you a fortune in heating bills and you can skip an expensive house inspection by finding leaks yourself!
Storm Doors
This is another great hack to help you lower your energy bill during the winter. By installing a storm door in your home, you are giving your house a second line of defense against cold air that tries to sneak in.
Keep Composting
Some people think that when it gets cold outside, they’ll no longer be able to compost outdoors. Composting needs to be a mixture of green (nitrogen) and brown (carbon) ingredients. During the winter, green scraps from your kitchen will be produced, but brown matter such as leaves and plants will be in short supply. During the fall, keep bags of fallen leaves and plant debris to use over the winter months to keep your compost bin thriving! Temperature is also a big factor when it comes to your compost bin. Make sure that you keep your bin insulated and out of the way of snow/ice during the cold months.
Stay Active Outside
The cold weather can seriously discourage us from getting outside and exercising. An easy way to combat that is by dress appropriately for the harsh weather. Dressing in layers is effective, because as you start working out, you’ll get warmer and warmer. This allows you to put on or take off whatever you need to regulate your internal temperature. So get outside and enjoy that beautiful brisk weather with a good workout!
Slow and Steady Wins The Race
One of the best ways to conserve gas while driving is to drive at a nice steady pace. You actually use more gas when you accelerate and brake frequently. So when its looking nasty out there with all of that snow and ice, keep it slow and steady to keep yourself safe and save gas!
These super simple ecofriendly cold weather hacks can help you feel better, live better, create a better environment, AND create a better winter experience for you and your family!
